How to play Kakuro

Kakuro is a cross-sum number puzzle — part Sudoku, part crossword. The grid has clue cells and open input cells. Each horizontal or vertical run of open cells must be filled with distinct digits (1–9) that add up to the clue shown for that run. No digit may repeat within a single run.

THE RULES

  1. Fill every open cell with a digit from 1 to 9.
  2. Each across run must sum to the number shown in the top-right of its clue cell.
  3. Each down run must sum to the number shown in the bottom-left of its clue cell.
  4. No digit may repeat within the same run (but the same digit can appear in crossing runs).

BEGINNER STRATEGY

  • Know the forced sets. A 2-cell run summing to 3 must be {1, 2}, and a 2-cell run summing to 17 must be {8, 9}. Short runs with extreme sums have only one possible digit combination — start there.
  • Use crossing runs. Every open cell belongs to exactly one across run and one down run. If you know a cell's down run candidates, they filter the across run candidates, and vice versa. Intersections are where you lock in digits.
  • Work constrained cells first. A cell at the junction of a short across run and a short down run has the fewest possible values — solve these before tackling long runs with many combinations.
  • Remember: no repeats within a run. Unlike Sudoku, digits can repeat across different runs. The uniqueness constraint is run-local, not grid-wide.
